Duck Breeds: A Guide to Domestic Ducks for Backyards

Duck breeds change what your yard, feed bill and noise tolerance will handle. A Khaki Campbell can be a fast egg layer but loud enough to annoy close neighbors. An American Pekin grows big, eats well and can sit quietly in the mud. A Call duck may fit a small space, but it has the volume of a much larger bird. The breed is the first choice, not the only one.

This table is a hub for about 20 domestic breeds and commonly sold types, grouped into layers, dual purpose, heavy and bantam. Wild species are left out, and you should not raise wild ducklings as pets. Use the numbers to compare adult weight, eggs per year, egg color, noise and flying, then match those to your goals.

If you are adding ducks to a chicken setup, running a 4-H project, or buying a box of spring ducklings, check the breed before you bring them home. One duck kept alone is unfair to the bird and lonely for you, so plan for at least two or three.
