Swedish Ducks: Blue, Black and Splash Varieties
Blue Swedish ducks are a domestic backyard breed, and they come in three color varieties: blue, black and splash. The color genetics are the first thing to understand. If two blue parents are bred, the ducklings should split roughly half blue, one quarter black and one quarter splash.
Blue is a dilution carried in one copy, while splash carries two copies. That makes color a simple inheritance pattern rather than a guess. Still, color does not change the basic needs of the bird. These are heavy ducks that need space, a dry coop and plenty of water for dunking and bathing.
If you want a cold hardy bird for a small flock, they may fit. If you want the most eggs from the smallest run, a lighter laying duck or Coturnix quail may suit you better.
