Quail Chick Brooder Setup

Quail Chick Brooder Setup

A quail chick brooder is not just a duckling brooder with more chicks. Coturnix quail chicks are tiny, quick, and poor swimmers. They can drown in a bottle cap, slip on smooth floors, and wiggle through gaps that look too small to matter. Set it up once, then manage heat and cleanliness daily.

At a glance

  • Heat: about 95 degrees Fahrenheit at chick level under the heat source in week one. Lower about 5 degrees Fahrenheit per week if chicks spread and feed well.
  • Space: about 1 square foot for every 5 Coturnix chicks is a common working number. More is better in a cold garage or crowded brooder.
  • Feed: fine quail chick starter, about 30 percent protein.
  • Water: shallow waterer with marbles or pebbles chicks cannot swallow.
  • Footing: paper towel or another grippy surface, not slick newspaper alone.
  • One mistake to avoid: an open waterer on a slick floor.

Set up the brooder in this order

Place the brooder

Clean the brooder, dry it, and put it indoors away from drafts and direct heat from a window.

Cover smooth floors

Cover smooth floors with paper towel, shelf liner, or another grippy surface. Tape or weigh down the edges so chicks cannot flip it.

Set the heat first

Set the heat source before chicks arrive. Place a thermometer at chick height under the heat source, not on the floor.

Add safe water and feed

Add shallow waterers with marbles and a feeder with quail chick starter. Keep both within reach, but not directly under the heat.

Add the chicks

Add chicks when the spot under the heat source is about 95 degrees Fahrenheit and they can move away if too warm.

Heat, water, and footing

Watch behavior more than the dial. If chicks huddle under the lamp, they are cold. If they press to the wall, they are too warm or facing a draft. If they sleep in a loose layer, eat, and move evenly, heat is close. Coturnix feather fast, so lower heat by about 5 degrees Fahrenheit each week while the floor stays warm and dry.

Use a jar lid, tray, or automatic waterer, then add marbles until only enough space remains for a beak dip. Check for poop and refill daily. Do not let Coturnix chicks free swim until they are feathered and can get out, dry off, and warm back up.

Splayed legs happens when chicks slide on smooth surfaces and their legs push outward. Paper towel gives grip, but change it daily. Put newspaper underneath for absorption, then replace the top paper. Keep the brooder dry. Wet, slick footing is where trouble starts.

Sides, feed, and daily checks

Sides, feed, and daily checks

Use sides at least 18 inches high and no gap larger than one fourth inch. Coturnix chicks can jump earlier than you expect, and they can squeeze through small holes. If you use a heat lamp, screen the top with hardware cloth, the stiff metal mesh sold for runs and fencing, but follow the lamp clearance.

Coturnix chicks grow fast. Use a fine quail chick starter around 30 percent protein, either as a dedicated quail feed or the closest starter or grower for small birds. Keep feeders low and clean, and pair dry feed with fresh water.

Daily checks are simple: warmth, dryness, water depth. Replace wet paper before chicks stand in it. Skim marbles and refill water. If a chick looks chilled or weak, warm it in an indoor carrier and ask an avian vet. Do not let ammonia build up in a closed tote.

Quail chick brooder questions

How much space do quail chicks need in a brooder?

Give about 1 square foot for every 5 chicks in week one. If they crowd away from heat or pile, add floor space.

How high should brooder sides be?

At least 18 inches, with no gap larger than one fourth inch. Add a screen lid if you use a heat lamp or if chicks start fluttering.

Can I brood quail chicks with ducklings?

Not for tiny Coturnix. Ducklings splash, step, and swamp shallow water. Keep them separate until both groups are big enough not to crowd or wet the other.

When can I move quail chicks out of the brooder?

When they are feathered, dry, and eating without help, and the cage is draft free and predator proof. Read [raising quail](raising-quail) for next steps.
